IN MEMORIAM
Paula LaVonne (Jones-Stover) Almquist
June 3, 1966 - October 14, 2013
Paula was born on June 3, 1966 to Walter and Elizabeth Jones in Hillsboro, Oregon. She grew up one of four children surrounded by many cousins and extended family. In 1984 she graduated from Glencoe High School.
On December 7, 1985, she married Loren Stover Jr. The couple rented a house in Hillsboro off Main Street. A year later they welcomed their first daughter, Kailie. Soon their family grew to four with the birth of their second daughter, Piper.
The family moved to Vernonia where they lived for a number of years. During the 1996 Vernonia Flood, Paula, motivated by her love of neighbor and desire to make sure all had what they needed, worked diligently in providing flood relief. The family moved again and settled in the college town of Eugene, Oregon. In 2006 Paula underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor. The operation seemed successful.
In 2007 Paula witnessed the marriage of her daughter Kallie to Trevor Cummins while her own marriage to Loren was struggling. It ended later shortly thereafter and she returned to the Hillsboro area.
Still driven by a desire to help others, Paula returned to school and attended Portland Community College. Her goal was to become an occupational therapist and assist disabled people with their transition from the hospital to home. However, despite her being a straight A student, her dream was cut short with the discovery of cancer.
On August 18, 2012, in the presence of family and friends, Paula married John Almquist. The couple made their home in Hillsboro.
On the evening of Monday, October 14, 2013, at her home and surrounded by family, Paula's battle with cancer quietly ended.
Paula's life was one of love and kindness. She had the unique ability to raise an infectious laugh from those around her. She had many talents and interests: She was an accomplished thespian in high school; an entrepreneur starting and running her own cleaning business. She was very involved with rebuilding her Land Cruiser and participating in off-roading adventures. Paula loved home decorating, and if you were somewhere Paula decorated, you would always feel at home.
Paula was preceded in death by her daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Stover.
