Harlan Richard Nelson was born to Melvin Edward and Marjorie Ella (Goldbeck) Nelson in Fremont, Nebraska. After the birth of his younger sister, Marjorie Ella, the family moved to Ocean Park, Washington.
When Harlan was 11, his mother passed away in April of 1945.
In November of that same year, Harlan's father married Frances Catherine (Huff) Parkins. With her children, they became a family of two adults and nine children.
The family returned to Nebraska where Harlan graduated from Fremont High in 1951.
In 1956 Harlan met a divorced mother with two young girls, Karen and Peggy. On May 11, 1956 he married Mary Lou (Veale) Sydnor. In December of '56, Mary Lou gave birth to her first son, Harlan Richard Nelson Jr, "Sonny". Over the next six years the family grew with the addition of three more daughters and a son: Susan ("Suzie"), Marjorie ("Genie"), Claude Edward ("Eddie"). The family relocated to Los Angeles where Harlan and "Tudy"'s youngest child Mary Jo Nelson was born.
By 1969 the family had moved to Hillsboro, Oregon. The following year, on August 1st, 1970, Harlan's step-mother died unexpectedly.
In 1978, Mary Lou was diagnosed with cancer. She lost her battle on December 14, 1978.
On May 16, 1981, Harlan married Shirley Teetz.
After he retired, the couple moved to Boulder City, Nevada.
On May 2, 2019, Harlan entered the hospital with pneumonia. He passed away on May 4, 2019.
