People, please, please, please, just because you name your dog Einstein it doesn't magically endow him with the ability to think and reason. Sure, your dog may be able to perform tricks and even give the impression of being able to figure things out but he is just a DOG! He looks to you to be the smart one and take care of him, protect him.
Tuesday evening around 10pm a friend and I made a late evening run (drive) to Walmart for Powerade. On our way back home we pass over a dry canyon. The canyon is about two city blocks wide at that point. Instead of building a bridge, the powers-that-be decided to pile rock and build the road on top. They did provide a tunnel near the west end though, for pedestrians in the canyon to pass under the road. The "road" is a 4 lane highway with a turn lane in the median. Anyway, as we drew near that area we noticed the only other car on the road and in front of us slow down. I was befuddled. I didn't see any reason to slow in the middle of this overpass. We too slowed down. Just then a guy wearing dark jeans and a grey hoodie ran across in front of the car ahead. Oh, no problem. The other car accelerated and was gone. We did the same but just then a dog appeared in front of the car - not in the distance - right in front of the car! Needless-to-say, there was a thud and he went under the car.
We stopped and when I looked back I saw the dog on the sidewalk with its master. The poor dog wasn't dead, thank heaven. We went back. The owner in the hoodie was checking his baby all over to see if it was hurt. The owner said it was all his fault. He had scaled the rock wall to get up to the road. Since his dog wasn't able to follow, he let him off his leash. He said he figured the dog would go to the tunnel and meet him on the other side.
WHAT? Are you nuts? Dogs don't reason, Oh I can't climb this rock wall so I'll just run to the tunnel a block away and meet my master on the other side. No! They are going to find a way to FOLLOW YOU!
Thank heaven the dog was a okay. I can't say as much for myself. I was quite shaken. No sleep tonight.
Then Wednesday night. Again, I go walking with my friend, making a 2 mile loop around the neighborhood. When we get about two blocks from home, a young man possibly in his 30's approaches us and asks if we are with the fire department (because we are wearing reflective vests). I told him, "No. Why is something wrong?" He said he just got home and the alarms were going off inside the house. He went in and found his uncle had shot himself.
The guy, the nephew, is obviously in shock. He's pacing around. My friend calls 911. I ask the nephew if his uncle is still alive. He said he doesn't think so. He said he didn't want to touch him, he's still holding the gun. He told me I could check, his uncle is just inside the side door. The nephew goes back in the house. I hear him calling his uncle's name really loud. He comes back out and sits on the floor just inside the garage. He starts to cry. I felt so sorry for him. How awful to walk into your home and fine that. I can't imagine.
The police, rescue and fire department arrive. One cop took my name, address, date of birth and phone number. The other just took my friend's name. We leave. No sleep again tonight.
Last night was calm. No excitement.
So, how was your week?
